Description:

To provide assistance to the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief or Division Commanders in the planning, organizing, directing, supervising managing and evaluating the Police Departments Criminalistic's Unit function and activities. Supervise and assist criminalists in the investigation of crimes through the collection and analysis of evidence from crime scenes in order to help in the identification of the perpetrator and to prove and sustain charges brought by the judicial system.

Essential Functions:

• Direct the activities of the Criminalistic's Unit, and to establish and efficient operational routine in keeping with acceptable Criminalistic's laboratory procedures.
• Provide 24-hour Criminalistic's Unit coverage for the department.
• Research and evaluate new developments and techniques in evidence evaluation and other Criminalistic's functions.
• Provide training opportunities for unit personnel.
• To ensure that all evidence is subject to available and useful examinations.
• Provide technical assistance and counsel on Criminalistic's matters as directed by the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief or Division Commanders.
• Participate in budget preparation as it pertains to the needs of the unit, and maintain inventory and control over equipment assigned to the unit.
• Ensure that all vehicles assigned to the Criminalistic's Unit are properly equipped and ready for service at all times.
• Coordinate crime scene processing, information and security needs within the department, and assisting local, state and federal agencies when required.
• Review crime scene reports and work orders completed by criminalistic's personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor Degree with five (5) years experience in the Forensic Field of Law Enforcement, or the equivalent in education, training, and experience, which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must have completed a certificate program from an institute of higher education in Forensics Investigations or Crime Scene Technologies and provide the necessary documentation of this.
