William H. Sousa, Ph.D.

William Sousa is the Director of the Center for Crime and Justice Policy and a Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The focus of his writing is on crime and disorder reduction policies implemented by police agencies, with an emphasis on the policy implications of the ‘broken windows’ hypothesis. His current projects involve police order-maintenance practices, policing technologies, and community crime prevention strategies. He is the co-author (with Kenneth J. Peak) of Policing America: Challenges and Best Practices. His publications have appeared in journals such as The Journal of Criminal Law & Criminology, The Journal of Experimental Criminology, and Police Quarterly. Dr. Sousa has been affiliated with the Police Executive Research Forum since 2021 as a Senior Research Scientist. In this role, he helps to guide the activities of PERF’s Research Division.
