Chief of Police
Irving, Texas

The City of Irving is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and is home to 256,684 residents over 67.9 square miles. A thriving economy, combined with its proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth International and Dallas Love Field airports, has made Irving a magnet for business and industry. IPD has built an excellent police-community relationship that engenders trust, advances community policing, and increases public safety. Irving seeks a Chief of Police who is passionate about that mission and enthusiastic about this opportunity. The next chief will continue the momentum and progress on several initiatives and foster the “service first” culture that exemplifies IPD officers and staff. With an annual budget of $74.65 million, the Irving Police Department is a forward-leaning police department that prides itself on community involvement and a collaborative approach to policing and problem-solving. IPD employs 403 sworn officers and 214 civilian employees working in the Office of the Chief of Police or one of three Bureaus, each managed by an Assistant Chief. The ideal candidate will play a significant role in the continued evolution of public safety by providing expertise and insight from the police executive perspective. The ideal candidate will find innovative strategies to increase the department's capacity to engage Irving’s rapidly changing community. The selected candidate will have a demonstrated track record of promoting diversity within the department and the community. The ability to manage change and competing interests is essential, as several capital projects are likely to come to fruition during the next chief’s tenure. Position requires at least ten (10) years of increasingly responsible command and supervisory experience in municipal law enforcement, including five (5) years of administrative responsibility. Candidates should have a proven and demonstrated track record of working effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community. Experience should also include developing and implementing innovative community policing and crime control strategies. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a subject related to the position is required. A Master’s degree in public administration or a related field is highly desirable. Advanced training such as the FBI National Executive Institute, FBI National Academy, PELI Program, Southern Police Institute, or PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) is considered a plus. The current salary range is $180,276 - $217,296. Placement within the range will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications. The City augments salary with an excellent array of benefits.
