Huntington, IN (population 17,022). The City of Huntington is seeking law enforcement professionals to apply for the position of Chief of the Huntington Police Department. Huntington is the second largest City in northeast Indiana. Its 9 square miles incorporate a thriving community of friendly neighbors, excellent schools, and growing businesses. As the county seat of Huntington County, Huntington is located 25 miles southwest of downtown Ft Wayne. 

The Police Department has a complement of 35 full-time, sworn officers and three additional staff positions. Officers operate from a newly constructed police station and are well equipped. Department compensation is competitive with a strong benefits package.

The Huntington Police Department enjoys a history of community support and working openly in partnerships with the community to foster an atmosphere of cooperation and trust. The position is available due to the retirement of the current Chief of Police following a 22-year career with the Huntington Police Department. The next Chief of Police will have an opportunity to build on those successes by advancing strategic priorities to maintain public trust, reduce crime, and improve community policing. 

Qualified candidates will demonstrate:

  • Exceptional communication skills including the ability to listen well in addition to speaking and writing clearly;
  • A wise, collaborative and effective approach to problem solving;
  • A minimum 10-years of experience in law enforcement or related field;
  • A commitment to lifelong learning and development;
  • Integrity in personal and professional conduct; and
  • The ability to balance supporting law enforcement officers alongside consistent and clear expectations for professional conduct and proactive accountability.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversight of day to day law enforcement operations
  • Managing staff and personnel issues, including promotions and discipline
  • Recruitment and retention of police officers
  • Train and educate staff on proper procedures to boost efficiency and public trust
  • Strategic planning and implementation
  • Financial management of the department, including preparation of an annual budget
  • Improvement of existing policies and ordinances 

The Chief of Police is appointed by and directly accountable to the Mayor and the Board of Public Works & Safety. The wage range for the position is $77,000.00 - $83,000.00; starting salary will be competitive and dependent upon qualifications. The City offers an excellent benefits package.
