Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in criminology/criminal justice or a related field and five years of related experience.  Police executive leadership and/or experience in educational/professional program development is preferred. Additional experience may be used on a one-to-one basis to offset the educational requirements.  The university offers market competitive salary and benefits.  Grade EI. Salary Minimum $66,153 Midpoint $92,172 Maximum $120,557.

Preferred Qualifications

Juris Doctorate and Doctor of Philosophy degrees as well as experience in both organizational leadership and the administration of police educational and/or training programs, and a minimum of five (5) years progressive police leadership experience, culminating in command level or higher is preferred.

Position Description

Nominations and applications are sought for the position of Director of the Southern Police Institute. The Southern Police Institute is a part of the Department of Criminal Justice in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Louisville. It awards both academic (graduate and undergraduate) and continuing education credits through its programs.  This is an executive staff position with responsibilities for programs and services at the Southern Police Institute (SPI). This is a five-year appointment with the possibility for renewal following a successful five-year review. The mission of the Southern Police Institute is to provide advanced leadership and professional development training to law enforcement practitioners, nationally and internationally.  In fulfilling this mission, the Institute is committed to best practices in law enforcement, police reform and policing strategies that promote social justice.  Since its inception in 1951, its program of instruction has been based upon the belief that law enforcement is a demanding activity requiring the highest levels of professional preparation and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration, leadership and participation in the instruction, research, and service missions of the Southern Police Institute. This includes teaching one course each semester in the Administrative Officer's Course (academic credit program). The successful candidate for Director must be capable of moving the Southern Police Institute forward as a leader in police reform and social justice as well as ensuring that Southern Police Institute (SPI) continues to promote responsive and progressive professional education and training programs.  The Director works closely with the Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice and interfaces with members of the Southern Police Institute Alumni Association.
