The Village of Ashwaubenon is currently accepting applications for the position of Director of Public Safety. The Ashwaubenon Department of Public Safety is a fully integrated system whereby all sworn personnel perform the functions of law enforcement, fire service, and EMT/Paramedic. This trifecta is unique within the state of Wisconsin. This is an exciting opportunity to manage this intricate system.

Department Overview

The Ashwaubenon Department of Public Safety is well respected and enjoys great community and Village leadership support. The Department has strong support by a politically stable and forward thinking seven-member Village Board.  It is a community-oriented and progressive agency employing 51 public safety personnel who are each fully trained law enforcement, firefighter and EMT/paramedic.  This force is supplemented by 25 paid on-call fire fighters and eight civilian support personnel.   The department has an annual budget of approximately $8.5 Million and the overall Village budget is $16 Million.

On an annual basis, the Department averages 18,500 police calls, 1,600 rescue calls of which about one-half are advance life support (ALS) calls, and 267 fire calls of which less than one-third are working stills.  Many working stills are manufacturing based.

Community Overview

Ashwaubenon is a vibrant suburb of Green Bay and surrounds historic Lambeau Field.  While just 17,000 residents call it home, this regional hub to shop, work and play grows to 35,000 or more during the day.  While it is a football town at heart and the Green Bay Packers are active in the community, the village also hosts a large regional shopping district, the Resch Center (concert venue), competitive collegiate baseball and soccer stadium, and a new expanded expo center (opening in 2021) which provides loads of entertainment to both locals and tourists year around.  Plus, we have the best cheese curds (fried or fresh) in world!

Positive Overview

The Director of Public Safety acts as the chief administrative officer over police, fire, and emergency medical services and works under the general guidance and direction of the Village Manager. The Director performs a variety of complex administrative, supervisory and professional functions in the overall planning, coordinating, directing and managing of the department.

The ideal candidate for this position has a strong commitment to applying a progressive and creative approach to law enforcement and utilization of technological strategies for problem solving.  Well-qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate past successes in building relationships, both internally and externally and the ability to inspire change through trust and cooperation.  They understand the value of community partnerships, engage in performance-based management, and lead by example to maintain a positive team culture by exhibiting an approachable demeanor and appreciation for diversity and inclusion.  The candidate selected for this position will have substantial experience in strategic planning and goal achievement as they will be responsible for the creation, prioritization, evaluation, and recalibration of the agency’s strategies and outcomes.

The salary range for the Director of Public Safety is $96,215 – $106,905, depending upon qualifications. The Village of Ashwaubenon offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision and a deferred compensation plan.  The Village is also a participant in the Wisconsin Retirement System which includes employer contributions.

Residency Requirement: Residency within 15 miles of the Village boundaries is required. 

Minimum Requirements:

The position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Fire Science, Public Administration or closely related field from an accredited college or university (Master’s Degree preferred), in addition to ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience within a public safety organization or police agency, five (5) of which are considered command-level administration positions.

The candidate must have a valid driver’s license, meet the State of Wisconsin certification requirements as a law enforcement officer within 120 days of hire, become certified as a Firefighter One within 12 months, and complete NIMS training through level 800 within 120 days.
