New Braunfels, a community steeped in old-world German heritage and perfected by an unrivaled quality of life, lies deep in the heart of the Texas Hill Country in both Comal and Guadalupe Counties. The city is ideally located on Interstate 35, almost an equal distance between San Antonio and Austin.  New Braunfels has a current population of 90,000 and growing.  New Braunfels is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas with more than two million tourists visiting annually.  The City operates under a council-manager form of government.

The City Manager is appointed by the City Council and is responsible for the day-to-day operation of all city departments. The Police Chief reports directly to the City Manager and leads a staff of 174 sworn and civilian members and oversees an operating budget of approximately $19.8 million. The department operates under Civil Service rules as defined by the Texas Government Code Ch. 143. The City of New Braunfels seeks a Police Chief who is an honest, open, and approachable servant leader committed to supporting a positive departmental culture that is focused on faithfully serving the citizens and community.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, police science, or related field, and seven (7) years of command-level law enforcement experience with progressive responsibility in police administration. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Graduate work or an advanced degree in police administration or public administration is preferred. Graduation from a command leadership program such as the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP), LEMIT’s Leadership Command College, or a similar program is highly desired.

The selected candidate must possess a current and valid Advanced Law Enforcement Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), or a similar level of certification from another state. Master Peace Officer and Instructor certifications are preferred. Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment is required.
