THE CITY OF ATHENS, TEXAS SEEKS

POLICE CHIEF

The City of Athens is a hidden gem with a rich heritage, nestled in the Piney Woods of East Texas, ideally located just 75 miles from Dallas, 35 miles from Tyler, Corsicana and Palestine, and 26 miles from Canton. Established in 1846, four months after the United States annexed Texas, Athens is the county seat of Henderson County. An estimated 12,750 residents enjoy the charm of a small southern town that retains many of the conveniences of living in a larger city.

The Athens Police Department (APD) is a state accredited law enforcement agency committed to promoting and supporting public safety and protecting the rights and property of residents. Additionally, the APD operates under the provisions of Local Government Code 143, “Municipal Civil Service.” In addition to the chief, the APD relies on one assistant chief, two lieutenants, six sergeants, six corporals, sixteen police officers, one police secretary, one records clerk, five dispatchers and one evidence technician. APD serves citizens via the following divisions: administration, investigation, patrol, support services and animal control.

Reporting directly to the city manager, the police chief performs highly responsible administrative law enforcement duties, including, but not limited to, planning, organizing and directing the work and activities of all employees in the department in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, and consistent with “best practices in policing.”

The City of Athens desires to hire a respected, team-oriented visionary who has a reputation of being a trusted leader, and a professional who possesses the highest degree of integrity, law enforcement competence, and an unquestionable commitment to excellence. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Police Administration, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or a closely related field desired and a Master’s in a closely related field is preferred. A minimum of 15 years progressively responsible police experience (with at least 5 in a command rank and responsibility – lieutenant, captain, assistant chief or chief) possession of, or the ability to secure a valid Texas Driver’s License, possession of, or the ability to secure, at a minimum, an advanced level certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
