The City of Elk Grove, California is conducting a national search for its next Chief of Police. Elk Grove is known for its low crime, high quality of life, progressive police department, and high service levels. With a population of more than 174,000 that is highly diverse in ethnicity, age, and income levels, Elk Grove is the second largest city in the Sacramento region. The Elk Grove Police Department, newly formed in 2006, is highly capable and held in high regard by the community of Elk Grove. Current staff includes 146 sworn officers and 108 professional staff. The next Chief of Police for the City of Elk Grove must have a strong commitment to community policing. A typical way to qualify would be with education equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, along with ten years of increasingly responsible experience (with four years at the command-level). A Master’s degree and completion of executive-level leadership programs, such as the California POST Command College, or the FBI National Academy, is highly desirable.
