Organizations
The Target Corporation recently hosted a summit
of corporate and law enforcement executives to identify and exchange
transferable experiences around streamlining business processes, attracting
talent, and managing organizations more effectively. This session will highlight
the findings from that summit and reveal future efforts at sharing these
innovations, while making the case for enhancing public and private partnerships
for future work in this regard.
1:30-3:00 Evaluating
Foot Patrols: What Do the Data Show?
The Philadelphia Police Department
and Temple University recently completed a of foot patrol deployments in areas
throughout Philadelphia. The effort involved more than 250 police officers who
were assigned to foot patrols in 60 of the most violent locations in the city.
This session will highlight the preliminary results, including a 22-percent
decrease in violent crime in the targeted areas, and illustrate how this
strategy is gaining a wider appeal.
3:30-5:00 Police and Social Media
The use and influence of social media has grown
tremendously in recent years and there is a need for police leaders to
understand the implications. Social media can be used as a tool by police to
inform, solicit information and to meet investigative goals. The downside is
that these same platforms can become venues for inappropriate displays of
evidence or other unanticipated activities. The panelists in this session will
examine the issue of social media within the policing context.

Reconciled?
This session will examine the often competing
needs of conducting traffic stops and engaging persons in public to promote
community safety and security, while managing the impact these practices may
have on overall community trust and legitimacy.
3:30-5:00 Moving the Work of Criminal Investigators Towards Crime Control
Criminal investigators can play a
central role in understanding and preventing recurring crime problems. The
panelists discuss why and how police departments and managers should strive to
inspire a spirit of innovation and creativity among investigators in responding
to crime that goes beyond simply managing their caseloads and making
arrests. This session is a product of the Executive Session on Policing and
Public Safety that is funded by the NIJ and convened at the Kennedy School of
Government.
3:30-5:00 Becoming a Chief: The Winning Strategies
The process of getting the job as a
Chief of Police is one that lends itself to an array of options and strategies –
there is no single winning program. Whether you are trying to rise from within
an organization or compete as an outsider, the nuances for each require some
advance knowledge on what the decision-makers evaluate in their list of
candidates. PERF’s executive search consultant, Charlotte Lansinger, will offer
insights from her years of experience in helping to match police executives with
police departments while leading a conversation by chiefs who have succeeded as
both internal and external candidates.

acclaimed documentary film about immigration and policing in Prince William
County, Virginia will be screened and discussed.
