PERF In The News - Detail Info

04/28/2012
The first article is about a session at PERF's Annual Meeting on Thursday about the use of firearms in homicides, robberies, and aggravated assaults. PERF wishes to thank the six police departments that provided information for an in-depth analysis of all of the gun crimes committed during a single week last year: Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Austin, San Diego, Philadelphia, and Toronto. PERF thanks all of the police departments that responded to a gun crime survey that served as the basis for the discussions, and to the police officials and ATF executives who participated in the Annual Meeting session. Finally, PERF gratefully acknowledges the support provided by the Joyce Foundation for this research. This issue of the Clips also includes a link to a PERF Powerpoint that was used at the gun violence session.

The second article is about the formal response of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton to a report issued last September by the Task Force on Secure Communities. The 14-member Task Force was chaired by PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler and included 5 PERF members: PERF President Charles Ramsey; Las Vegas Sheriff Douglas Gillespie; Tucson Chief Roberto Villasenor; Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez; and Harris County, TX Sheriff Adrian Garcia. Director Morton created the Task Force because ICE realized that there are significant concerns in many cities about how Secure Communities functions. The Task Force produced a tough assessment of the program and specific recommendations to improve the operation of Secure Communities and increase its credibility with the public. In his formal response, Director Morton stated that ICE agrees with nearly all of the Task Force's recommendations, and he outlined steps that ICE is taking to implement them. This issue of the Clips also includes links to the Task Force Report and Director Morton's response.
