Following is a statement by PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler regarding PERF’s role in assisting the City of Sanford in identifying candidates who can be considered for the position of interim police chief:

The Police Executive Research Forum has been asked by Sanford City Manager Norton N. Bonaparte, Jr. to assist the city in identifying candidates who may be considered for interim police chief. PERF has assisted more than 100 jurisdictions as they have sought to identify candidates for top law enforcement executive positions—most recently in Denver and Corpus Christi, TX, and earlier in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Boston, Charleston, SC, and other cities.

PERF has a 35-year track record of developing best practices and facilitating discussions on the critical issues facing police departments.  This involves considerable experience working directly with police chiefs and communities across the nation to explore the issues they are facing. Recent projects have included research on reducing police use of force, as well as improving the police response to sexual assault crimes. Through programs such as PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police, we work closely with current and aspiring police executives.  And police leaders often ask PERF to assist them in taking on difficult challenges with regard to reviewing management practices, implementing crime reduction efforts, and providing technical assistance.
