In recent months, PERF has hosted three national meetings on how to implement our new ICAT (Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics) Training Guide. Approximately 800 law enforcement professionals, representing more than 250 agencies, attended the sessions in New Orleans, Baltimore, and Los Angeles.ICAT is an integrated training approach designed to help officers safely and effectively defuse many types of encounters, especially incidents involving persons who are unarmed or are armed with weapons other than firearms and who may be experiencing a mental health or other crisis. Feedback from our sessions in New Orleans and Baltimore has been positive, and many agencies are now in the process of incorporating ICAT into their training program. Given the continued interest in ICAT, PERF, in conjunction with the Camden County Police Department, is holding an ICAT training and implementation meeting on Thursday, July 13th in Camden County. Over the past two years, the Camden County Police Department has worked closely with PERF on our research into use-of-force issues and the development of our training materials. At the meeting, trainers from the LAPD and some of the agencies that piloted ICAT will discuss and demonstrate implementation of the ICAT Training Guide.
