PERF Report Offers Police Leaders' Perspectives on Immigration Enforcement

PERF has released a new report that explores the issue of illegal immigration from the perspective of local police and sheriffs' departments across the country.

The report, Voices from Across the Country: Local Law Enforcement Officials Discuss the Challenges of Immigration Enforcement, is based on regional meetings of police executives and other officials held in Raleigh, NC; Colorado Springs; and Laredo, TX. In addition, PERF convened a meeting at the Prince William County, VA Police Department to hear officials from that department describe their experience in implementing a new immigration policy.

The report, which PERF produced with support from Carnegie Corporation of New York, is available here

REGISTRATION CLOSED for Critical Issues in Policing Series conference: "An Integrated Approach to De-Escalation and Minimizing Use of Force" on Feb. 23, 2012

While we are thrilled with the level of interest this conference has generated, we must close registration for PERF's upcoming Critical Issues in Policing Series conference, "An Integrated Approach to De-Escalation and Minimizing Use of Force" due to room capacity limitations. As always, PERF is grateful for the enthusiasm and active role its members take in moving the field of policing forward and discussing today's tough issues.

PERF Releases Report on Use of New Technologies in Policing

PERF has released How Are Innovations in Technology Transforming Policing?, the latest in its "Critical Issues in Policing" series. This report summarizes the findings of a PERF survey of police agencies and a 2011 conference in Washington in which more than 100 police chiefs and other officials discussed the policy issues and practical considerations they have faced with new technologies. The report details how police executives are using technologies such as automated license plate readers, gunshot detection systems, social media such as Facebook, and various types of video cameras to reduce and prevent crimes and establish closer connections to the communities they serve.

The report is currently being printed and will be sent to all PERF members. It is available online at:http://policeforum.org/library/critical-issues-in-policing-series/Technology_web.pdf
